Even though many P2P file-sharing systems have been proposed and implemented, only very few have stood the test of intensive daily use by a very large user community. The BitTorrent file-sharing system is one of these systems.

File Formats for Digital Photography – JPEG, RAW, TIFF Comments Off

Here’s an excellent overview on the three main formats (.jpg, .tif, .raw) for saving digital photos on your camera and some of the pros and cons of each from one my favorite digital photography blogs, EarthBound Light. I know I’ve kicked around the the JPEG vs. RAW format encoding debate with photographer friends plenty of times since I’ve started shooting digital photos and this a great tutorial and overview on the basics for anyone getting more serious about digital imaging.

Print Design for Web Designers: RGB vs CMYK and All That! Comments Off

Dave Shea put out a sweet article today about basic print design for those of use who are primarly used to working on the web. It covers most topics related to color, including spot, process, color managment and the basic of RGB vs CMYK. Here’a a couple exceprts.

“Since web geeks think in pixels and RGB, it’s a daunting new world to head into unequipped. Over the years across quite a few print jobs by now, I’ve had to learn by trial and error. As someone used to thinking in RGB, I’ve looked high and low for a good resource to turn to for help in converting that knowledge to CMYK. This may not be that resource, but I figure I’ve amassed at least the beginnings of a how-to on the subject. Consider it non-authoritative, but hopefully useful. Most of the knowledge contained within applies to Photoshop, mainly because I’ve had the most trouble with it.”

Flickr + Del.icio.us + Blogger Feeds Via Feedburner Comments Off

I’ve consolidated my Del.icio.us links, my Flickr! images, and the posts from this site into one slick new XML file published via Feedburner. Check it out and subscribe to the RSS feed now. You can get the words, links, and photos I publish online all in one stream.

For those of you who aren’t hip to RSS (Really Simple Syndication) yet… read this. It will all become clear to you. It’s a great little web syndication technology that allows you to receive real-time updates via a news reader a website or email when your favorite sites are updated or when topics you are interested in appear anywhere on the internet. Anyway, read up at Wikipedia and don’t forget to grab my RSS feed.

Photo on Dollarton Highway – Vancouver, BC Comments Off

These photos are out in front of my new house on Dollarton Highway in North Vancouver on the way out to Deep Cove in British Columbia, Canada. Here’s a couple expiraments with keeping the shutter open longer at night to get the motion blur. This one is 10 second exposure on a Canon 20d DLSR using a Canon 24-70mm f/2.6 L-series lens.

I don’t really know what I’m doing but it’s fun stuff. I might go downtown tonight where there is more action and try again.

Would love any advice or feedback on shooting things like this… moving lighted things at night to get a cool blur. Thx.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM – New Telephoto Lens for my Canon 20d Comments Off

Today I bought this new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens for my Canon 20d. This is my first lens other than the standard EF-S 18-55mm f/3,5-5,6 USM my camera came with. I’m pretty stoked. My friends will appreciate it I’m sure, with a little more telescopic power I can back off and get the camera out of your face.

10 Cool Things about OS X Panther Comments Off

The latest version of OS X from Apple is scheduled to be available on October 24th. O’Reilly Network has published a review of the hot new Mac operating system code-named Panther. The review touches on 10 interesting new features and upgrades, including;

1. Exposé, 2. Command-Tab, 3. Threading in Mail, 4. Fast Preview, 5. The New Finder, 6. Safari Rendering, 7. Font Book, 8. File Vault, 9. Secure Erase Trash, 10. Active Directory Integration.

I’m looking forward to giving it a whirl. Cheetah was horrible, Puma at least got me up on Office, Jaguar was pretty tight but Apple’s users are looking to be reinspired. Hopefully Panther can do it.

Rawr!
