Home from Gnomedex 7.0 - Comments (1)

Back in Vancouver for a week after a few days in Seattle at Gnomedex. Gnomedex is a secret club of uber geeks that gets together once a year to hang, chill, chat, chest beat, network, share, and collaborate. Or something. It’s put on by friends Chris and Ponzi and draws a great group of nerds, dorks, and geeks from around the globe. I got the chance to hang with lots of old friends like Ethan, Lee, Mark, Dave, Darren, Scott, Schlomo, and Jay and met lots of new ones like Guy, Cali, Jacob, Molly, and others.

Bryght World Tour 2007 Comments Off

(cross-posted from my ‘other blog‘ over at you should subscribe to that RSS feed as well as this one if you really wanna keep up to date).

Leavin'This is a quick post to update customers, partners, collegues and friends of my upcoming travel schedule and the events that Bryght will be participating in over the next few months.

Gnomedex 7.0 – heading down to Seattle to see Chris and Ponzi and the rest of the uber-bloggypodvlogger digerati. Always one of my favorite events of the year. Seriously be ready to get your geek on.

Barcamp Vancouver – Vancouver's 2nd Barcamp. I'll be leading a PhotoCamp. 180+ people already registered. Hear me now, believe me later… don't miss out… this is a great grassroots technology and geek networking event.

Barcamp Beijing – the first ever Barcamp in Beijing. Scales and I are still pulling lots of details together but we have a date and a venue so the show *will* go on. :)

China Access 2008 – I will be presenting on Social Media and the Internet at this years China Access 2008 event for the creative services industries in Beijing.
Kris Krug Loves Chinese Food
Barcamp Shanghai – last year I helped organize the first ever Barcamp in China and it was a remarkable success. This year's event is carrying over a lot of that momentum and will be bigger and better.

GDC China – Scales and I will be joining New Media BC and Hal Josephson at this years Games Developer Conference in Shanghai.

DrupalCon Barcelona – Mister CEO hasn't given me the greenlight on this one yet, but my fingers are still crossed. Regardless look for Bryght boys Boris, Adrian, Steven, and Djun in Spain.

Stuck in the middle there between Barcamp Vancouver and my trip to China I'll also be spending several days in Toronto catching up with the peeps at b5 media as well as Bryght customers, partners, and friends like Philip, Amber, Kooze, Obi-Will, and David Crow, Mark, Mark, Gabe, and many many others… in fact, it would be rad to plan a meetup.

Burnkit Website Reboot Comments Off

Burnkit ReBootMy buddies over at Burnkit, the hottest web design and creative services firm in Vancouver, launched their new website today… and it’s smokin’. They are a part of a bunch of boutique design agencies that are participating in a web redesign contest called May 1st ReBoot.

The site features video embedded in Flash and lots of awesome photos of the Burnkit team and their stunning new offices in Railtown. I was honored to find upon clicking through the super creative ‘Team’ section of the site that a couple of my photos had been used on Jeremy Crowle’s profile. Swedish! I should probably also mention, that like any uber-hip new media outfit… they have their own Facebook group.

Solid work guys. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next. :)

Screamo Photoshoot with Lenore Owens and Mitchell Bowman Comments Off

Screamo PhotoshootRecently I had the chance to do a photoshoot with models Lenore Owens and Mitchell Bowman in Gastown that we ended up jokingly calling "Screamo". We had the help of our friends Kimberley Nelson of Discollection, Shai of PrepWork, and Tamar Ouziel. We've done several shoots together now over the past few months and I can't say enough about what a great styling team they have been to work with. Thx guys. :) Check out the whole set over at Flickr.

New JPG Magazine Photography Magazine Comments Off

I joined the new community website over at JPG Magazine. JPG Magazine was started by friends Derek Powazek and Heather Champ and has had close ties with Flickr since the beginning. They’re launched a cool new site with community features and I think it’s going to be a hit.

I submitted a couple photos for the upcoming issue.. please go check them out and voice for them. :) The website seems to be the first project of newly founded company 8020 publishing who is looking to ‘revamp the way magazines are published’. From their website:

The online world has created a culture of creation among ordinary people. Meanwhile, magazines are still partying like it’s 1899. Writers write, readers read, and never the twain shall meet.

Simply put, this can’t last.

Magazines need to open their doors to their readers. Instead of thinking of writers and readers as two separate communities, magazines need to realize that they really only have one community: the people who give a shit about their magazine.

Good stuff guys.

Amazing Flickr Testimonial Comments Off

I was humbled tonight to get a beautiful testimonial on my Flickr profile page tonight from Mommy Peace… someone I know online but have never met.

“A search for “Flaming Lips” brought me to KK +, his friends and one of the best ever photos of the band.

KK’s photos have also acted as the portal for my children and my studies on degrees of seperation, community and its evolution. KK+ is also an execellent example of the importance of ones name.

Continue to live big Kris…the next generation is watching.”

Wow. That’s like the sweetest thing ever Danie. Thx. :)

Gnomedex 6 Comments Off

Gnomedex Wall of LoveLast week the Bryght guys went down to Seattle for our second Gnomedex in Seattle put on by friends Chris and Ponzi. We saw lots of our geek peeps and a great time was had by all. The event was keynoted by John Edwards who was there to make connections with the blogging community and hear and learn about technology (I got my pic taken with him by Ted Leung backstage… w00t!).

My favorite talks were by Ethan Kaplan and Philip Kaplan (not related). Ethan works at Warner Brothers Records and talked about the future of music and the sales/marketing/distribution machine that propels it. Phillip runs AdBright and started FuckedCompany and gave an engaging chat about promotions and building buzz.
Gnomedex - 18.jpg
Media was created, products and companies were launched, and connections were made. Check out my photoset on Flickr as well as the Gnomedex tag. Boris and I got interviewed by the Lipgloss and Laptops girls and the episode turned out pretty funny… Boris going on about his hair and me getting nailed with questions about my China exploits and personal grooming habits. *blush*

Thanks to Chris and Ponzi for an awesome event and all their hospitality. I love it that you guys liked last years photos enough to use them so prominently and hopefully you'll find some more this time around. And thx so much for the awesome Robosapien… my daughter Sierra loves him!
Experience Music Project Party
It was so fun to see great old peeps like Eric, Chris, Tara, Will, Marc, Alex, Bre, Matt, Captain AJAX, Dave-O, Jay, Derek and Air, Ted and Julie as well as meet new ones like Corey, PUD, Ben, John, and Kosso.

Vancouver Shout-Outs and Name Dropping Comments Off

I’m just getting back into the swing of things after an extended weekend trip to Vancouver. It was great to see so many people and to catch-up on what everyone has been up to.

Boris pulled together a great little geeks night out at SteamWorks. Darren was hella hungry and thought my friends were odd. It was great to meet Richard, my personal PHP guru. Jan had the best card of the night and Ean was the best dressed. Dave had been munching on some seriously good drugs. Troy showed up and took on the role of host passing out beer, wings and onion rings. *Mmmm* Roland couldn’t make it but introduced me to the Templeton and caught me up on the plans for Bryght. J.Mac is busy in quasi-academic land and is going to take the city by storm with his words. Jones and I hit it off and it was great to chat about the bleeding-edge of RFID. Tom is alive and kickin’ and our kids are going to the same school. Rudiger is using the web and tech to make the world a better place. Jer and Adam are keeping it real and inspiring me to step it up. JSHDNFRD was out of town and missed. Healy was busy too busy like usual, and PJ is just anti-social I think.

Anyway, been a while since I’ve done shout-outs. Click all their links and give them some love.

Monday Morning Shout-Out Comments Off
Well, Jeffie is writing again (cheer!) and has a couple new blog posts up. However, I like this post from the peanut gallery the best. :)

You are starting to sound like the automated “phone-lady” at Telus. “We’re all really busy right now, but if you’ll just hang on a little longer….” Nobody gives a shit about the day job JP. Entertain me dammit!

Posted by Big Brother at October 21, 2003 08:30 AM
Zeldman and Co. have re-launched with a new look and new content. I fear I’m in the minority on this one but I don’t really like the new design… it’s just nice to have the site back up though. Good work guys.
Best known for their tragically hip bible design, off-da-hook anniversary parties, and hedonistic road trips… JSHDNFRD and and Adam Neilson have added another supa-star artist to their design team… Jeremy Crowle. Check out his profile and design portfolio.

Monday Morning Shout-Out! Comments Off
25. Male. Lonely. Paul wonders why he’s described as ‘not marriage material’.
Tim has apparently redesigned his Breadcrumbs site this weekend. Lots of good stuff here including old favorites like the Lifetime Movie Title Generator and his State Quarter Collection.
Differentiate yourself from the dot snobs. The crew over at UGLY has added some great new rich media work in their portfolio. I heard they have capacity for 1 new client project before winter holidays. Get in line!
