I’ve been spending a lot of time this year working to turn my photography from a project into a business. I’ve been making photographs way more often, on larger and more well paying projects, while still staying involved in the internet and technology industry. For me (tech + art = happiness).
In an effort to catch everyone up on what we’ve been up to lately we’ve posted a series of recap blog posts over on our site. In the near term we’ll be updating our portfolio, pulling together an accurate client list, and exploring other creative ways of getting our work in front of the right people. We’ve been working really hard on getting this ship in shape for the future as well as shooting almost everyday.
As a part of making sure that our studio runs like a well oiled machine we’ve brought on Danielle Sipple as our Studio Manager. She’s been working on photo editing, photoshoot production, estimating, invoicing, and promotions. She’s awesome and if you work with me and the team over at Static you’ll likely meet her.
South by Southwest 2009 – Band & Live Music Photography – The next big trip for Static Photography was traveling down to the southern section of Austin, Texas for the yearly festival of South by Southwest . SXSW includes four days of Interactive and Film followed by four final days of Music.
Creative Class Gets Together at Pecha Kucha Night 5 in Vancouver – Translated as the sound of conversation Pecha Kucha is the optimized vision of creative presentations. At every Pecha Kucha Night around the world, each presenter is allowed 20 images shown at 20 seconds a piece, with a grand total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds for their entire presentation. Having this time limit really keeps presentations down to just the good stuff.
This was the fifth time that Pecha Kucha has happened in Vancouver . Kris Krug was chosen with 11 other presenters to speak on varying topics. Krug’s discussion was a visual handbook on open-sharing . He was positioned along side Rex Weyler ‘s photo presentation from the startup of Greenpeace , Dolly Hopkins ‘ discussion on her involvement with the Illuminaries Festival , and Shawna Cox ‘s documentary adventure with the desert races.
Matt Hern started the Purple Thistle back in 2001 with 7 teenage youth. Carla Bergman is an adult mentor who helps the youth run the collective today. Carla is also the founder of Rain zine which features art and writing from youth at the Purple Thistle as well as us at Static Photography .
Lotsa other stuff goin’ on out there for us too but no time or space for it here. Follow me on Twitter. See ya soon!
Checking in from the basement of CBC‘s Vancouver headquarters as we kick off an event which is bound to be quite remarkable – the CBC Digital Development Labs.
This morning was introductions by the entrepreneurial-minded attendees chosen to display and refine their ideas for possible development by CBC. I’m participating as a mentor (along with others) here to advise, gut-check, collaborate with (and learn from) the emerging visionaries.
Our secret lair (which is very cool by the way – set up with a variety of workspaces, conversation breakout areas, Mac labs, gamer stations – feels like jPod) is also loaded with industry types acting more as observers to see how projects come together in the new media paradigm.
As Canada’s venerable national broadcaster (in multiple official languages and numerous platforms no less), CBC knows how to incubate and develop it’s famous documentaries, comedy series, news programs and sports and deliver via TV, radio. With the help of a few key employees, the Ceeb now distribute a massive variety of podcasts to go along with the rich content on their web presences.
CBC (like the weather) is the topic of grumbling from Joe Public but I feel CBC deserve significant credit for realizing "that times are a changing" again.
CBC-ers including event host Gary Marcuse and Producer Johnny are sharp enough to know that a group of dedicated enthusiasts with a clever idea can go from concept to market at a speed which would boggle any old-school suit and tie exec. And they are eager to learn how to participate, contribute and nurture these emerging artists and help get their productions out to Canadians (and sure, the rest of the world too) to enjoy.
What the new media makers might lack – which CBC can add to the stew -is story-telling savvy, marketing outreach acumen, methods of understanding audience and, as importantly, wise advice from experienced people who’ve shepherded numerous media-related projects from concept through execution. Certainly the seasoned advice can be the final ingredient needed to launch a "show" which will end up in the common cultural vernacular.
In my role as a mentor, I’ll be the primary sounding board for one group and the secondary for another as we meet and workshop in all sorts of scenarios over the next 2 and half days. The groups’ ideas are remarkable in their variety and originality ranging from narrative stories told using Flash animation to using mobile phones to tell the stories. Here’s the roster of participants so you can tell your friends’ "you knew about them months ago" when their shows are all over the Interwebs.
Here’s a video of me talking about photography at Northern Voice earlier this year. It was taken by Robert Scoble of PodTech and has been posted all over the web including over at Digital Photography School where there is an interesting pissing match going on between people who think my video is a good informal intro to photography and the people who think I’m lame because I don’t know where in Germany the glass in my lenses is ground. *smirk*
Check out this quick interview with George from Flickr at the Vancouver International Digital Festival on Granville Island. I think if you absolutely forced me to pick a favorite Flickr peep…. I’d have to go with George.
Well, today is the first day I’ve woke up and not felt jetlagged. I’m still seriously playing catchup… between being out for a couple weeks at Bryght and then going to Vidfest immediately upon my return I’ve been completely snowed in! I’m also supposed to be at the World Urban Forum this week taking place here in Vancouver but alas, my media badge sits over there unused as I can only be so many places at once.
Anyway, here’s are some vlogs from my China trip that have been up on YouTube for a few days but that I hadn’t had a chance to post over here yet. Enjoy, and lets just try to forget about the whole getting naked thing. Pls. Thx!

Wassup internets. Here’s a couple more YouTube.com videos of Megan Cole and I wandering around Vancouver and carrying on. Check it out.
kk+ and MC wander around downtown Vancouver a bit and talk about the Vancouver sunshine and some of the cool *work* parties we have lined up over the next few days. BONUS: One free awesome bachelor home economics tip at the end of this meandering 5 min stream of consciousness. Probably worth it.
kk+ and MC checkin’ in from the Vancouver Sun Run. The background music is loud so the audio kinda sux, but I think we both look good at least… especially for 8am in the fuckin’ morning.
Yes, she’s cute. No, we’re not dating. Thanks for coming out.
Come hang out behind the Seymour Building w/ Megan Cole, Bill MacEwan and I as we get the skinny on Bill’s exciting new shared office space concept for independants called Workspace. You should totally check it out if you are looking for a collaborative and creative place to setup shop and get out of the spare room.
Apparently if I don’t post my YouTube video blogs to this site, people try to claim they don’t exist. Ok ok, you shouldn’t have to follow my online stuff at like 150 different places, but YouTube really could make it easier to integrate it all together. Anway…. come chill at 525 Seymour street in Vancouver w/ me and the Raincity crew before we did the Friday Social Software Geekout Lunch.
I’m way behind here on posting media from the past couple weeks and SXSW. It was awesome and I have a ton of photos and a couple videos to share and need to do a couple wrap-up blog posts over at Bryght and Backstage. But there is only so much I can do while doing 12 hours of business a day and catching 5 live bands a night. *sigh* Anyway, below are a few YouTube videos from our trip to SXSW last week. More stuff forthcoming… definately don’t miss the photos over at Flickr including an awesome Flaming Lips show.

I’m just getting back into the Vancouver flow after my trip to Italy and now it’s time to hit the road again. On Thursday I leave for SXSW in Austin, Texas for 2 days. If you’ve never heard of it or been, here’s a few stats that should give you an idea what I’m in for.

There are going to be so many awesome bands there… I’m very excited. I pulled together a quick list of the ones I plan to catch while I’m there. I know there are a bunch of others too but they didn’t seem to be listed on the official venue and band page on the SXSW website. If anyone knows of any other ‘do not miss’ shows, please let me know.
Oh yeah, I got picked by the SXSW crew to be one of their 6 videobloggers for the show. I guess I get a fancy Euro cell phone from them and a backstage, all-access, I’m a rockstar pass and my name on a bunch of guest lists. Woo hoo! kk+ over and out.
Uhm, I don’t even know what to say. Just watch these videos. Oh, and yeah… we are working here too, but you can find out more about that over here >> Olympics and Web 2.0 Symposium.
kk+ and Scales hanging in Downtown Vancouver outside UBC Robson Square at Open Source CMS Summit. Come hear about the party we’re pulling together with Blue Flavor and NewsVine. Props to the skaters who helped us with the intro.
File your lawsuits at Kris Krug Dot Fuckin’ Com. Ok, I can be a ridiculosity sometimes. This video is one of those times. Rambling, ranting and generally being silly while walkin from a photoshoot back to OS CMS today.
It’s been a been a big week. Really f’n busy. Check in with me between one meeting and the next one as I roll through downtown Vancouver and blow off some steam.
Shout-outs in this vlog to Janet Johnson, Robert Scales, and Uberbru.
We stumbled into the geekiest IKEA installer on the internet. Come listen to him talk about Google Adsense, web building, SEO, and web CEO while he builds our cheap prefab furniture and shares with us one of the beautiful success stories of the internet. If you live in Vancouver check him out at http://www.assemblenow.com
For 3 years I was the editor-in-chief of a great online magazine called *spark. It was a culture and technology monthly with a philosophical bent and great design and photography. Here are the archived issues.
